Our Holiday Lights class is back!

This year, Lydia Billings will be co-teaching our popular holiday lights photography class with a very special guest: Justin Roller, who will act as our official Christmas tour guide, providing us with the amazing history of Christmas in New York City. During the holidays, Rockefeller Center and the surrounding area present a magical and unique feast for the senses. Capturing the scene with your camera, though, can prove difficult. Lydia will give you the tips and teach you the tricks you need to create images that truly illustrate the festive wonder of New York City during the holidays.

Along the way, we’ll be stopping for some wonderful holiday stories from Justin. He’ll answer questions like:

  • Was Christmas actually banned in the New World after the Revolutionary war?
  • What famous New Yorker made Santa Claus fat?
  • Who saved Christmas from the impish Lord of Misrule?
  • What Jewish composer penned the most famous Christmas song ever written?
  • How did they get all those lights on the Rockefeller tree?
  • How many high kicks are in the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular?

On this tour, you’ll learn how to use exposure, aperture and shutter speed to document the amazing and wide array of scenes you’ll encounter. You’ll leave with some breathtaking images and you’ll gain a new appreciation for what you can create with your camera. See images below from last year’s classes!

Bring any camera you have but leave your tripods at home since it’ll be too crowded to set them up.

Justin Roller is a certified tour guide and the co-creator of Guerrilla Tours here in NYC. For over 10 years, Justin traveled around the country as an entertainment professional working in New York City, Los Angeles, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and four years with Disney Entertainment Productions. Fascinated with the stories each place he visited had to tell, he has made it his mission to spread the word and to keep history fun!
